It's fascinating to see how he chooses to capture the decisive moment with his stills, as well as the compositions and use of light. This is one of the main reasons I was particularly drawn to this book, as I was born and raised in Devon, and it's wonderful to see how it is documented through Roger Deakins' eyes. Byways (2021) is Roger Deakins’ first monograph and in 2022 his photographs have been exhibited in institutional art space and galleries in US and Europe to international acclaim. The distance the bounce source is from the subject controls the ‘softness’ of the light but also the fall off. I might do that but it is no means necessary.
